Record menu (P, A or S)

The record menu is accessed by pressing the menu button whilst in a RECORD mode (P, A or S), use the jog dial to move up and down the menu and push left and right to change setting. Pressing OK makes changes permanent.

All settings are defined below.

The only settings stored after power-off are flash and recording mode).

SPOT METERING: Used to select default metering or spot metering.
FLASH MODE: select between auto flash, anti red-eye, fill-in (forced) flash and flash off.
SLOW SHUTTER SYNC: to switch slow-sync on select either 1 (front curtain sync) or 2 (rear curtain sync).
FOCUS MODE: Auto focus (0.8m ->), Macro focus (0.2m - 0.8m), 2.5m fixed or Infinity (landscape) fixed.
SELF TIMER/REMOTE: to take a self-timer shot or to put the camera in remote-control mode.
SEQUENCE/PANORAMA MODE: select either OFF, burst shooting (2fps, 10 images / 50 @ VGA) or panorama shooting mode.
DIGITAL ZOOM: select either 1.6x, 2x or 2.5x digital zoom.
WHITE BALANCE: select either Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten light or Fluorescent.
ISO: Select either 100, 200 or 400 ISO (equates to CCD sensitivity), in P mode ISO is automatically adjusted.
RECORDING MODE: either SQ (640 x 480 / 1024 x 768), HQ (1600 x 1200) or SHQ (1600 x 1200 less compression / TIFF).

Comments: logical enough menu but again it's overloaded, some of these function, specifically FLASH MODE, FOCUS MODE and WHITE BALANCE should be selectable directly from function buttons on the outside (top?) of the camera. It's sometimes too much work to navigate through the menus simply to change a straightforward setting (especially bearing in mind the difficult to use jog wheel).

Playback menu

The playback menu is accessed by pressing the menu button whilst in PLAY mode, use the jog dial to move up and down the menu and push left and right to change setting.

All settings are defined below.

SLIDESHOW: click OK to start a slideshow.
PICTURE INFO: select ON to briefly display exposure information over each image reviewed.
FUNCTION CARD: optional Olympus-brand only SmartMedia card functions.
CARD FORMAT: format SmartMedia card (erase all contents - requires confirmation).
PRINT ALL: mark all images for printing with optional compatible printers.
PRINT DATE STAMP: print the date and time on images.
PRINT CARD INDEX: print a "contact sheet" of images on compatible printers.

Setup menu

The setup menu is accessed by rotating the mode dial to SETUP, use the jog dial to move up and down the menu and push left and right to change setting.

All settings are defined below.

ALL RESET: Reset all adjustments from the record or play menus.
SHARPNESS: Controls the in-camera sharpening, Normal seems to apply a very slight amount of sharpening, soft softens.
SHQ: allows you to control the output of SHQ either low compression JPEG or uncompressed TIFF.
SQ: Select the size for SQ mode either VGA (640 x 480) or XGA (1024 x 768)
BEEP: Turn camera beep on and off.
REC VIEW: briefly display review of image after it is taken or not.
CARD FORMAT: format SmartMedia card (erase all contents - requires confirmation).
INDEX DISPLAY ADJUST: display four, nine or sixteen images in thumbnail view mode.
BRIGHTNESS: control the brightness of the LCD (current image review is displayed whilst adjusting brightness).
DATE/TIME: set the date and time and date format.
