Compared to... Panasonic DMC-TZ1

Although it's about to be replaced (by the TZ2 and TZ3), at this moment in time for most potential buyers the Panasonic DMC-TZ1 is probably the most obvious competitor to the Coolpix S10. It has one million pixels less, but otherwise the specification and size are very similar. We have included samples at each camera's lowest sensitivity setting, ISO 400 and ISO 800.

Studio scene comparison (S10 @ ISO 50, TZ1 @ ISO 80)

  • Nikon S10: Program AE mode, ISO 50, Default Image Parameters,
Manual white balance, +0.7 EV compensation
  • Panasonic DMC-TZ1: Program AE mode, ISO 80, Default Image Parameters,
Manual white balance, +0.33 EV compensation
  • Lighting: Daylight simulation, >98% CRI

Although the extra megapixel won't make a huge difference to most users there is no doubt that the S10 is pulling a little more detail out of the scene than the TZ1. Nikon's lower default contrast and saturation are also fairly obvious.
