Compared to... Nikon P5100

Here are some moderate ISO shots from both the P50 and its tougher, higher-res, less wide-angle sibling, the P5100. These are ISO 800 shots, above which we believe the output to be too low-quality to sensibly discuss. Although the P5100 has 50% more pixels than the P50, it also has a sensor around 75% larger, so, with slightly larger pixels, we'd expect it to do slightly better as the ISO increases.

Both of these shots suffer badly from heavy noise reduction, with a distinct loss of contrast that it can cause. Despite these noise reduction efforts, noise is visible in both. The P50 appears to control chroma noise better than the P5100, with neutral blacks and grays not showing the blotches of color that that P5100 is exhibiting. Unfortunately, the noise reduction that has achieved this has left the colors looking pretty washed-out. Luminance noise has been given more of a free rein, leaving a grain-like pattern. This pattern is pretty uniform, so isn't too distracting but doesn't give the impression of added sharpness that it sometimes can. The P5100, with its larger sensor elements, appears to be both capturing and retaining slightly greater detail.
