At ISO 400 noise has become a serious issue for both cameras, though it's interesting to see two very different approaches to noise reduction side by side like this (the cameras almost certainly share the same sensor). Nikon is using a lot less harsh noise reduction (especially on luminance noise), so the results look more grainy and less processed. Again the inherent softness of the images is obvious, and once you've applied some sharpening to try to bring out the detail the results really do look very noisy. I wouldn't use ISO 400 personally unless I was sure I wasn't going to produce prints bigger than about 6x4 inches.
