Menus (contd.)

The camera's custom settings are split into six alphabetical color coded categories, this makes it easier to remember a specific option and quicker to enter the custom settings menu at the correct position. You can still scroll through all custom settings options as one big menu if you wish. Note that on this menu an asterisk (*) next to a custom setting means that it has been changed to something other than the camera default. A green superscript one (¹) indicates the default setting.

While it's nice to see the D5000 offer this level of customisation - including the ability to switch the direction of the dial and meter display, such that it behaves like every other brand's cameras - it does mean that the menus, like this sentence, can end up rather long and convoluted. As long menus go, this is one of the easier systems to use with the color-coding and sensible grouping of options making it easy to find your way around. This level of complexity will delight users upgrading from early entry-level cameras but might initially appear a bit intimidating to those users who are planning to stick to the Scene modes.
