Camera information display and settings
Because of the removal of the control panel LCD the D40X uses the main LCD monitor for camera information display and the change of settings. By default this display is not shown, instead you press the 'info' button to show or hide it, you can optionally have the display on all the time.
Information display format
Via the Setup menu you can select the information display format for Auto / Vari-program modes and the P, A, S M modes separately. There are three formats to choose from; Graphic, Classic and Wallpaper, the later of which allows you to pick your own image as a wallpaper (very 'mobile phone'). The information shown on these displays has already been detailed earlier in this review so I won't repeat myself, sufficient to say that the information display provides an overview of pretty much all camera settings.

Shutter / aperture graphics / meter
You will already have spotted the graphic representation of shutter speed (the segmented line around the aperture) and the aperture on the 'Graphic display format'. Below is an example of what you see as shutter speed and aperture change (one stop steps here). On the right below the digital meter appears in manual mode to indicate how close the selected exposure is to the metered exposure.
Press the 'i' (setting) button to switch to setting mode, here you navigate around the screen using the multi-selector (4 way controller) and press OK to change a setting. Nikon have fully realized the advantages of changing settings on screen by combining the setting change with either an indication of the effect of change or help in choosing the correct option. For example when changing image quality you get to see the estimated file size and remaining frames, when changing white balance example scenes are shown where that white balance may be appropriate.

Help is available throughout the camera interface, either in shooting mode, setting adjustment or menus, simply press and hold the help '?' button. Note that in shooting mode the '?' icon may occasionally blink, this essentially means that the camera has some advice for you and pressing the help button will display this (as shown below, left).
