Storage Compartment
 |
On the rear right of the camera, a new design door for Nikon, this
one slides and then tilts open, looks much better than we've seen
previously.
Microdrive fans will be disappointed to see the width of the CF
slot, yep it's STILL type I, given the new battery design that's
hardly surprising as I'd doubt the new battery could supply sufficient
power to drive the camera and a Microdrive.
|
I was also slightly disappointed that Nikon didn't choose
to flip the contacts on the CF slot so that the the small thumb lip on
the CF card would be facing the operator, this would make ejecting "stickier"
CF cards much more straightforward (maybe the next Coolpix). That said
the eject button does force the card clear enough of the body to grip
it (not like the 990).

Connections
 |
 |
|
On the same side as the storage compartment are two connections,
top being USB / serial connection (USB cable included, serial optional).
The bottom DC power input from the optional Nikon AC adapter (8.4V
~ 0.9A).
|
The video out connector
is on the other side of the camera without a rubber cover. |

Tripod Mount
 |
Base of the camera is a simple enough affair, with a plastic tripod
socket mounted too close to the front of the camera for comfort.
Note also that it's location means you won't be able to change
the battery with the camera on a tripod. Small rubber feet would
have been nice, it's amazing how useful the rubber base on the 990
is for steadying the camera against a table top or other fixed object.

Flash
 |
The built in flash has a quoted range of:
Wide: 0.4 – 3.7 m/1ft 4½" – 12ft 2½"
Tele: 0.4 – 2.5 m/1ft 4½" – 8ft 2½"
Macro mode: 0.2 – 2.5 m/8" – 8ft 2½"
That's less powerful than the Coolpix 990 but probably sufficient
for what the 880 is designed to do. It would also appear that Nikon
have dropped the sync speed to 1/60s to compensate for the lower
flash output.

Lens Cap
 |
At last, a sensible lens cap! Sprung edges and supplied with a
string (this stuff may sound trivial to people not familiar with
the Coolpix range of digital cameras but a good lens cap has been
on the most wanted list for quite a while).
It's worth noting that the lens does fully retract and once the
lens cap is on the camera is completely portable without worry of
knocking or breaking anything vital.
