Just like previous Coolpix
digital cameras (and several other manufacturers cameras) the 8700
uses a 'rough image' thumbnail to speed the initial display of the
image in play mode, this is replaced by a finer detail image once
the image data has been loaded from the Compact Flash card.
Press the display button
to switch to a clean view with no overlaid information. Press again
to return to the basic information overlay shown on the left.
Image information pages
In addition to the above display mode there are also five other information
"pages", these are accessed by simply turning the command dial,
one click per page. The first three pages cover camera settings and exposure
information, the fourth page displays basic exposure information along
with a histogram and highlighted overexposed areas of the image, the final
page uses the focus confirmation sharpening filter to indicate the exact
focus point on the image, the chosen AF area for the exposure as well
as basic exposure information.
3: White balance, Saturation, Sharpness,
Digital Zoom, Lens Converter, File Size
4: Thumbnail view with overexposed
areas highlighted (blinking), Filename, Basic exposure information
and an exposure histogram
5: Filename, Basic exposure information,
AF area selected for focus. Note that the image is sharpened in the
same way as focus confirmation in record mode
Image magnification / Thumbnail display
The 8700 provides playback
magnification up to 6.0x. Magnification levels are selectable from
1.2x to 6.0x in 0.2x steps, use the zoom controller to magnify the
image, press the SET button to return to normal "full size"
image. Once magnified the image can be scrolled using the 4-way direction
pad. Press the shutter release to create a cropped copy of the current
view (clip).
Two thumbnail views are
available, a 2 x 2 (4 image) and 3 x 3 (9 image) view. Simply push
the zoom lever towards wide angle to step 'out' to each view. With
a thumbnail view active you use the 4-way direction pad to navigate
around the thumbs, turn the command wheel to scroll through "pages"
of thumbnails.
Miscellaneous
Several of the Play mode menu options require you to select images,
this is carried out using this three thumbnail row view. Use the
the left and right arrows on the multi selector to move through
the selection and up or down to select/deselect.
Press and hold the audio record (exposure
compensation) button to attach an audio clip of up to 20 seconds to
the current image.
