JPEG/TIFF/RAW Image Size & Quality
Standard Test Scene
The Coolpix 5700 offers a wide variety of resolution and image format options. You can choose from JPEG (three compression levels) as well as RAW (Nikon .NEF) or TIFF at 2560 x 1920 (native resolution). JPEG image sizes are 2560 x 1920, 2560 x 1700 (3:2 aspect ratio), 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960, 1024 x 768 and 640 x 480.
To give an impression of what some of the combinations of image size and quality produce the table below is a cross reference of some of them:
- 2560 x 1920 TIFF
- 2560 x 1920 JPEG Fine
- 2560 x 1920 JPEG Normal
- 2560 x 1920 JPEG Basic
- 1600 x 1200 JPEG Fine
- 1280 x 960 JPEG Fine
- 1024 x 768 JPEG Fine
- 640 x 480 JPEG Fine
Images below are cropped 240 x 100 area of the image magnified
200% (nearest neighbour).
As you can see there is very little difference between JPEG Fine and TIFF modes, you certainly don't gain very much by shooting TIFF and will loose a lot in time taken and storage used. The 5700 becomes the first Nikon Coolpix digital camera to support RAW output (more storage efficient and closer to the 'digital negative'). There is a slight degradation in quality using the Normal setting and a very visible degradation at Basic. The lower image sizes will of course have that crisp sharp look.
