Connections

The Coolpix 5000's connectivity is to be found at the top of both the left and right side of the camera behind small rubber doors. On the right side are the USB and DC-IN connectors, on the left side is the A/V out jack (which now includes audio output).

Tripod Mount / Camera Base

On the bottom of the Coolpix 5000 you'll find a very nice metal tripod mount surrounded by three small rubber pads (again, a design element borrowed from the D1). Firstly we should note that the tripod mount is not aligned with the lens and thus won't be helpful to panorama shooters. Secondly it's too close to the battery compartment and so you can't change the battery with the camera on a tripod.

Lastly there are feet on the left side (battery compartment door) but none on the right, this leaves the camera a little unstable when placed on a flat surface, you have to be in the habit of putting your weight on the left side (shouldn't be a problem, that's where the shutter release is). This was most noticeable with a Nikon Speedlight mounted on the hotshoe.

Flash

The Coolpix 5000's flash unit has a very distinctive design, indeed it's a very prominent design feature of the front of the camera. The flash itself has a guide number of 10/32 (ISO 100 m/ft). Just beside the flash unit you can see the flash photocell, be careful not to cover this when taking a flash shot or the shot will be underexposed (there's even a special addendum in the box discussing this issue).

Hotshoe / External Flash

The Coolpix 5000 has another first, the first Nikon consumer digital camera to have a flash hotshoe (although previous Coolpix's have had flash sync connectors). The Coolpix 5000's flash hotshoe is of the ISO 518 standard type and supports Nikon's Speedlights SB-50DX, 28DX, 28, 27, 26, 25, 24 ,23 and 22s.
