Record mode display

As described earlier in this review the 7D does without a traditional LCD control panel information display and instead employs the more flexible (but probably more power hungry) method of using the LCD monitor as a record mode display for camera settings, exposure etc.

In record mode you can press the Display button to toggle between the full recording mode display, basic recording mode display or no display.

In addition after pressing certain buttons on the camera body to change settings such as white balance preset or ISO sensitivity the options are shown on the LCD monitor (this is also typically repeated on the viewfinder status line).

Instant playback

The 7D supports three different instant playback displays (after you take the shot); Image only, Image & information and Image & histogram (including blinking highlights). The duration and type of display can be selected in section three of the record menu. During this display you can press delete to cancel saving the image (with confirmation) or magnify for a quick close-up view (useful for checking focus / blur).

Play display

In a very similar manner to instant playback mode normal play mode also provides three different types of image display, however they are accessed in a different manner. You can toggle between image only, image & information and thumbnail index by pressing the Display button. Press the up arrow on the four-way controller to switch to Image & histogram mode. Note that in play mode the reduced image shown in histogram mode also blinks alternatively under and over-exposed areas of the image (it's a nice feature and a pity it's not available in Image only mode or Instant playback) - with the new firmware blinking low/highlights are shown in Instant Playback.

Magnification

Press the magnify button to magnify the current image. The image is initially shown at full magnification (4.7X for a full resolution), you can scroll around the image using the four way controller or change the level of magnification with the rear control dial. Press the center of the four-way controller to switch to area selection which allows you to move a loupe rectangle around the image and then return to magnified view.

Thumbnail index

The play mode menu allows you to select between 4, 9 or 16 thumbnails in index view or the 'File browser' which shows six thumbnails at a time and also allows you to quickly scroll between folders.

Other play mode displays

The play mode menu allows you to select between 4, 9 or 16 thumbnails in index view or the 'File browser' which shows six thumbnails at a time and also allows you to quickly scroll between folders.

Press the delete button to display this option box to delete the current image. Press the down arrow on the four way controller to rotate the image. Curiously the camera doesn't do this automatically.
