At ISO 400 the result of the Z740's aggressive noise reduction system can be clearly seen as smoother images. Unfortunately the amount of smoothing is so great that further fine detail has been lost, giving the images - when magnified like this - a smudged, blotchy effect. I'd rather have a little noise (which can easily be removed in post-processing if you wish) than to sacrifice fine detail in this manner, but that's a matter of personal taste. ISO 400 is usable if you're printing fairly small - say 5x7 inches - but at higher enlargements you'll see the lack of detail.
