Connectors
 |
 |
| On the
left side of the camera is the battery and PCMCIA
compartment which can take two Type I / Type II or
one Type III cards. |
On the
right side, tucked behind the hand strap and under
a rubber cover is a IEEE 1394 (firewire) connector
and AC adapter power input. |
One
noteworthy change for the 620 (compared to the 520)
is that the battery / PCMCIA compartment door opens
horizontally (front to back) instead of vertically
(top to bottom). The old vertical opening door was
sometimes awkward especially if the camera was placed
on a surface (as the door would be pushed upwards
by the weight of the camera). Note also that the latch
has changed to a more robust twist-catch type. |
Top-of-camera Controls
The
dial on the top left of the camera controls the drive mode, either
Single (S), Continuous Low-speed (CL; 2.0fps), Continuous High-speed
(CH; 3.5fps), Continuous slient-low-speed (CS; 1.0fps), and Self
timer (10 seconds). You may also re-program the default fps for
each of these modes.
As with most
of the controls on the camera there is a lock
button to hold down as you rotate the dial
(visible top left of the dial).
The red light
next to the dial is the self-diagnostic shutter
system which would only light if there was
a major problem with the shutter mechanism
(such as a shutter curtain failing), "Err"
would also be displayed on the LCD.
 |
On
the right hand side of the viewfinder
is the metering system selector, either
Spot, 3D Color Matrix or Center weighted.
Again, you must hold the lock button
whilst turning the dial. |
Top
right back of the camera (under your thumb) is the Main-Command
dial, Auto-Exposure and Auto-Focus lock and Auto-Focus start button.
The Main-Command
dial is used to select shutter speed in Shutter-priority
or manual exposure mode. To perform flexible
program changes in programmed auto exposure
mode.
Top
right front of the camera (under your index
finger) is the main power and LCD lighting
switch (again lock button must be held to
operate), Auto Focus area mode, Exposure mode
and Exposure compensation buttons (all used
in conjunction with the Main-Command dial).
On this image
you can also see the depth of field preview
button and mirror lock-up lever.
Rear-of-camera Controls
Gone
are the textual descriptions on buttons, now all icons are used.
DISP/MENU
(the top icon) - Switches the
LCD display on and off, when held
and used with the main thumbwheel
it selects between the six main
system software modes (image review,
4 thumbnails, 9 thumbnails, folder
selection, menu and contrast setting).
SELECT
(the cursor icon) - just pressing
this button when reviewing an
image will display the image
histogram, holding the button
and using the thumbwheel will
switch between each image (in
image review or thumbnail mode),
it is also used to navigate the
menu system.
TAG
(the tick icon) - allows you to
mark / unmark images, selection
can then be used for image deletion
or movement to other folders (image
marks are carried through to TWAIN
driver). Holding the button for
more than two seconds with an
image displayed on the LCD allows
you to record a voice annotation.
W.BAL
(the lightbulb icon) - allows
for selection between the five
white balance modes (AUTO, daylight,
tungsten, flourescent, flash).
Another
change from the 520 is the use
of a smaller four position cursor
control instead of the rotating
wheel. I personally preferred
the wheel approach which was much
more natural and quicker for navigating
through the menu and through images.
This
cursor control is also used to
select one of the five focal points.
