Studio scene comparison (JPEG)

This is our standard studio scene comparison shot taken from exactly the same tripod position. Lighting: daylight simulation, >98% CRI. Crops are 100%. Ambient temperature was approximately 22°C (~72°F).

Fujifilm S5 Pro (12MP) vs Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro (12MP)

Camera settings:

  • Fujifilm S5 Pro: Nikkor 50 mm F1.4 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Normal), Self-Timer

  • Fujifilm S5 Pro: Nikkor 50 mm F1.4 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Normal), Self-Timer
Fujifilm S5 Pro (12MP)
Fujifilm S3 Pro (12MP)
5,819 KB JPEG (4256 x 2848)
4,440 KB JPEG (4256 x 2848)

This is an interesting comparison as it clearly shows there is a very small difference in the output of the S5 Pro and its predecessor - though whether it's enough to make a difference in 'real world' photography is debatable. The main difference appears to be that the S3 Pro's default settings produce slightly (and I mean almost imperceptibly) sharper output and has higher contrast and saturation, but that the S5 Pro's output is cleaner and shows fewer Super CCD artefacts - in fact the processing is altogether more subtle.

Fujifilm S5 Pro (6MP) vs Fujifilm S3 Pro (6MP)

Camera settings:

  • Fujifilm S5 Pro: Nikkor 50 mm F1.4 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Medium/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Normal), Self-Timer

  • Fujifilm S3 Pro: Nikkor 50 mm F1.4 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Medium/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Normal), Self-Timer
Fujifilm S5 Pro (6MP)
Fujifilm S3 Pro (6MP)
3,727 KB JPEG (3024 x 2016)
2,884 KB JPEG (3024 x 2016)

Interestingly at 6MP the S5 Pro looks a lot better than its predessor, with cleaner, more detailed output and a far less 'processed' appearance (S3 Pro files tend to be a little 'over the top'). Sure, it needs sharpening to get rid of the overall softness, but I'd rather start with the shot on the left than the one on the right. A small improvement, but a real one.
