Compared to...

The most obvious competitor for the S5 Pro is the Nikon D200, and it seems fair to suppose that anyone seriously considering the S5 Pro is likely to be checking out the Nikon too. To make up the trio for comparison we're including the EOS 30D (on the basis that it is the closest thing in the Canon lineup to the S5 Pro in terms of pixel count and price), though this camera isn't in the same league, build-wise. Just out of interest there's also a quick 'side by side' later in this review showing the difference between the S5 Pro's interpolated 12MP output and the Canon EOS 5D's 'real' 12MP output.

In favour of the Fujifilm S5 Pro (vs. the Nikon D200)

  • Expanded dynamic range
  • Live Preview (albeit limited)
  • Face Detection in playback
  • Film simulation modes
  • Barcode reader option

In favour of the Nikon D200 (vs. the Fujifilm S5 Pro)

  • Higher 'native' pixel count
  • More file compression options and smaller raw files
  • Faster continuous shooting
  • Larger buffer
  • More features (including custom function memory banks, WB bracketing, interval timer and Wifi option)
  • Less expensive
