Compared to... (6mp)

Studio scene comparison (at 6mp vs. Canon PowerShot S50)

Here we will be comparing the FinePix S5000 Zoom with an output image size of six megapixels to a 'normal CCD' five megapixel digital camera, in this case Canon's PowerShot S50*. As you will note from the exposure values the S50 is more sensitive than its quoted ISO 50 producing almost the same shutter speed at F5.6 as the S5000 did at its rated ISO 200.

* From an effective pixel count point of view this is an unfair comparison, however while Fujifilm's marketing material still refers to cameras with the higher pixel count we must respond with comparisons in kind.

  • Fujifilm FinePix S5000 Zoom: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 200, Default Parameters,
    Auto white balance, Image size 6mp (2816 x 2120)

  • Canon PowerShot S50: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 50, Default Parameters,
Manual preset white balance, Image size 3mp (2592 x 1944)

It's fairly clear that the S5000's three megapixel sensor and lens combination are no match for the five megapixel sensor and three times zoom lens of the S50.

Studio scene comparison (at 6mp vs. FinePix F700)

As on the previous page here we will compare the F700 (SuperCCD SR) to the S5000 (SuperCCD HR), the only difference is that the output image size is now six megapixels.

  • Fujifilm FinePix S5000 Zoom: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 200, Default Parameters,
    Auto white balance, Image size 6mp (2816 x 2120)

  • Fujifilm FinePix F700: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 200, Default Parameters,
Manual preset white balance, Image size 6mp (2832 x 2128)
Fujifilm FinePix S5000 Zoom Fujifilm FinePix F700
ISO 200, 1/7 sec, F5.6 ISO 200, 1/7 sec, F5.6
1,522 KB JPEG 1,366 KB JPEG

A very interesting comparison which reveals that either the S5000's smaller sensor size or lens have reduced the potential resolution output in six megapixel mode. While the F700 clearly gains some resolution using its 6mp image size, the S5000 does not.
