Flash Hot-shoe

The flash hot-shoe allows you to use external flash units or studio systems. The manual says "Flash units that can be used with this camera must meet the following three conditions: (1) The aperture can be set, (2) External flash synchronization can be used, (3) The ISO sensitivity can be set. I had a fair amount of success using this old Olympus flash unit despite the fact that it couldn't have ISO set, a little experimentation and it worked fine, but only in P mode, in Aperture Priority the camera refused to meter correctly. The camera also worked well with Nikon's excellent SB-28DX.
The 4900Z has a unique external flash white balance feature, to ensure the correct white balance you go into the white balance menu, select manual white balance, aim the camera at a white sheet of paper and press the custom white balance button, the flash will fire and the camera will measure the white balance.
