Rear of camera controls

On the back of the camera you'll find the 'flip switch' zoom control (probably my least favourite implementation of a zoom controller), the 4-way control button and a column of camera settings button which are used in conjunction with selector dial.

Buttons (record mode)

MENU Menu

Enter or leave the record mode menu.
Zoom telephoto

Zooms the camera's lens towards the telephoto setting, maximum optical zoom of 102 mm (35mm equiv.). A full zoom from wide to tele takes 2.8 seconds. If the camera is already at maximum optical zoom and digital zoom is enabled the camera will apply increasing levels of digital zoom.
Zoom wide angle

Zooms the camera's lens towards the wide angle setting of 34 mm (35mm equiv.). A full zoom from tele to wide takes 2.8 seconds.

4-way control button

This controller has multiple functions:

 • Menus - Navigate and select options
 • Record mode - left / right to adjust exposure compensation
 • Manual focus - up / down to focus
 • Manual exposure mode - left / right to select shutter speed

Metering mode

Hold this button and roll the selector dial to select:

 • Multi-pattern Metering
 • Center-weighted Metering
 • Spot Metering

WB White Balance mode

Hold this button and roll the selector dial to select:

 • Auto
 • Daylight
 • Shade
 • Tungsten
 • Fluorescent
 • Manual
FOCUS Flash mode

Hold this button and roll the selector dial to select:

 • Multi-area Auto Focus
 • Spot Auto Focus *
 • Manual Focus
 • Infinity
 • Macro *

* In this mode with the FOCUS button held you can use the 4-way control button to select one of 9 AF points
AE-L Auto Exposure Lock

Hold this button to lock the exposure, as soon as you let go the camera returns to normal auto exposure mode. Can be held for multiple exposures.
PREVIEW Image Preview

Displays the last image taken, a press of any control button (such as a half-press of the shutter release) returns to record mode. Press the AE-L button in preview mode to delete the last image taken.
DISP Display mode

Press to select between LCD monitor display modes:

 • Live view with live histogram display
 • Live view with normal information overlay
 • Live view with brief information overlay
 • LCD monitor off

Buttons (play mode)

MENU Menu

Enter or leave the play mode menu.
Magnify

Magnifies the current image in 11 steps up to 3.2x. Use the 4-way control button to scroll around the magnified image.
Thumbnail view

Switches to a 3 x 3 (9 image) thumbnail view.
Delete

Deletes the current image, requires confirmation
DISP Display mode

Press to select between LCD monitor display modes:

 • Histogram and detailed exposure information
 • Basic information
 • No information overlay
 • LCD monitor off
