At ISO 400 the impacts of both noise and its reduction become apparent. However, the Canon copes much better with this challenge. While noise is and noise reduction effects are clearly visible in all areas of the image, a decent amount of detail is being preserved. Canon achieves this by being heavy-handed on the chroma noise (color blobs) and adopting a more laissez-faire approach with regards to luminance noise (grain). This strategy appears to work pretty well. We got used to grain during decades of film photography and regard it as a feature of the photograph while the color blobs caused by chroma noise are simply a nuisance to most viewers' eyes.
