Compared to... Olympus Stylus 800

Below you will find a studio comparison between the Canon PowerShot S80 and the only other compact 8 megapixel compact we've had in for testing thus far, the Olympus Stylus 800 (Mju 800), at ISO 400.

Studio scene comparison (@ ISO 400)

  • Canon PowerShot S80: Aperture Priority mode, ISO 400, Default Image Parameters, Manual white balance, +0.67 EV compensation

  • Olympus Stylus 800 (Mju 800): Aperture Priority mode, ISO 400, Default Image Parameters, Manual white balance, +1.0 EV compensation

  • Lighting: Daylight simulation, >98% CRI

At ISO 400 it's pretty much the same story, though the differences are less obvious due to the effect of noise and noise reduction on each image. Again the Olympus image looks crisper, but again this is almost entirely due to the high level of in-camera sharpening. The Canon image is visibly noisier (though not by a great deal), but again - strangely - looks cleaner, because the image is considerably less 'processed'.

Still a classic great camera. CHDK added the functionality that was missing and then some. With the extra goodies, its a bonafide classic.
