Compared to... Nikon COOLPIX P5100

Below you will find a studio comparison between the Canon PowerShot G7 and the Nikon COOLPIX P5100 at ISO 1600.

Again the effect of noise and NR are taking their toll on both images, and in truth there's really not a lot to choose between these two given that you're unlikely to be producing anything but the smallest print from files this noisy. That said, viewed at 100% like this the G9 is producing a shaper, more detailed result than the P5100, and it certainly has the edge even if the output still isn't anything to get excited about. ISO 800 is just about usable for social snaps (where capturing the moment is more important than absolute image quality), but I'd avoid for any serious photographic work.

My super wonderful G9 is going to turn 6 years old soon.

I am grateful to Canon for this sort of masterpiece, despite I have some troubles now due to dust on sensor. But I am sure I'll find the right people that will sort this out.
And I'll keep shooting with her.

Greets to all the reviewers from Italy.
