Movie mode

Like the G10, the G11 has only a 30 fps VGA (640x480) mode, which makes it stand out in an era when 720p HD movies are becoming the norm. And again, unlike some previous incarnations of the G series, the G11 has just three modes available while showing movies: Standard, Color Accent and Color Swap. The G11 encodes its videos using H.264 encoding method, rather than the more common but less efficient Motion JPEG system. This helps keep the G11's videos down to a pretty impressive ~1.3Mb/s while retaining good image quality.

White balance, exposure compensation, My Colors and the ND filter are also available, allowing a good degree of creative control over the output, in spite of the resolution limitations. As before, the quality is very good but the limited resolution (in a 4:3 aspect ratio that won't suit modern, wide-screen flat panel TVs), is the price to be paid for the camera's low light capability.

Movie mode has its own position on the mode dial and, as with stills recording, you can choose the amount of information overlaid on the live preview image.
You can also engage the color swap or color accent (mono with one color) modes by rotating the rear dial.
Pressing the 'Set' button at the center of the four-way controller lets you adjust the available settings.
Pressing the shutter button started movie recording and features a timer to warn how much footage you've shot.
In playback mode you can choose the amount of information you wish to see, with the same screens available as for playback of still images.
Pressing 'Set' brings up the movie playback panel, including the ability to advance within the video or edit clip length.
The start and end points of the video can be easily adjusted and a new, shorter video saved once you've positioned them to your tastes.
