Studio scene comparison (JPEG)

This is our standard studio scene comparison shot taken from exactly the same tripod position. Lighting: daylight simulation, >98% CRI. Crops are 100%. Ambient temperature was approximately 22°C (~72°F).

Canon EOS-1DS Mark III vs Canon EOS-1D Mark III

The EOS-1D Mark III is the yin to the EOS-1Ds Mark III's yang; it's the same camera on the outside, but on the inside it's built purely for speed, with half the resolution but twice the frame rate. We thought it would be interesting to see how the two compare - even if they are so obviously aimed at very different markets.

Camera settings:

  • Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III: Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100 (default base) JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Standard), Self-Timer

  • Canon EOS-1D Mark III: Canon EF 50 mm F1.4 lens, Aperture Priority,
ISO 100, JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Standard PS), Self-Timer
Canon EOS-1DS Mark III
Canon EOS-1D Mark III
5.4 MB JPEG (5616 x 3744)
3.1MB JPEG (3,888 x 2,592)

The 1-D Mark III is no slouch when it comes to resolution but it can't quite match the 1-Ds Mark III (and is showing slight signs of moiré on the face of the Martini bottle).

I bought my 1D Mark III Used. I bought it soupy for the purpose of Wave Photography. I love the 10fps. So clutch. Only thing I am not crazy about is the low megapixle. 10 mp is pretty low, Ie, GoPro hero 3 silvers are 11 mp and blacks are 12. They are only 300.
