Camera Menus

The 1100D's menu system follows the usual Canon EOS structure. Camera settings are separated across a series of sensibly ordered, color-coded tabs. As you'd expect, the range of options is similar to the EOS 600D although the camera does not quite offer the same level of customizability.

The menus are also context sensitive, with different menu options provided depending on which shooting mode you're in. In the 'Basic Zone' (Auto and scene-based) exposure modes you get a simplified sub-set of menus compared to P, Av, Tv and M, and in movie mode a whole different set of options appears in the red shooting settings tabs. Likewise if you attach an external flash you get an additional set of options to control its output. The menus for movie shooting have become so extensive that we list them separately below.

The full, 10-tab menu as experienced in Av, Tv, M, P or A-DEP modes. Most of the other modes present a simplified sub-set of these tabs with fewer options available. The exception is Movie mode, which replaces the four red tabs with movie-related versions.

Picture Style

The Picture Styles are a range of pre-programmed image parameter sets intended to deliver the best results in different situations. Each Picture Style has its own preset mapping for tone and color response as well as providing the ability to tune sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone for each. For instance the default sharpening for the Standard Picture Style is level 3, if you prefer weaker sharpening you can just adjust it downwards. Sharpness has 8 levels, contrast, saturation and color tone all have have 9 levels.

Playback Section (Blue)

The playback menu includes the usual set of options, including image protection, DPOF print ordering, and slideshows. There's no in-camera raw conversion or Creative Filters that can be found on the 60D and 600D respectively.
