Resolution Chart ComparisonShots here are of our 'version two' resolution chart which provides for measurement of resolution up to 4000 LPH (Lines Per Picture Height). A value of 20 equates to 2000 lines per picture height. For each camera the relevant prime lens was used. The chart is shot at a full range of apertures and the sharpest image selected. Studio light, cameras set to aperture priority (optimum aperture selected), image parameters default. Exposure compensation set to deliver approximately 80% luminance of white area.
Measurable results
The 1000D's absolute resolution is firmly in the middle of the range of its peers - slightly ahead of the Olympus, roughly equivalent to the Nikon and a fraction behind the Sony. Beyond this point, the data it produces is spurious and prone to moire. When looking at these figures, it's worth remembering that there are only enough pixels in a 10MP camera to correctly render around 1950 LPH horizontally, so all the cameras are doing a very good job of giving an impression of detail beyond the level they can theoretically record it. |
