This is our standard studio scene comparison shot taken from exactly the same tripod position. Lighting: daylight simulation, >98% CRI. Crops are 100%. Ambient temperature was approximately 22°C (~72°F). Camera settings as per previous pages.
The 1000D RAW files have been converted using an early beta version of Adobe Camera Raw that may not reflect the camera profile used in the final release.
Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS) vs. Olympus E-420
Canon EOS 1000D
3.0 MB JPEG (3888 x 2592 )
2.6 MB JPEG (3872 x 2592)
Without the sharpening that was being applied in the E420's JPEGS the gap between the two cameras suddenly opens up. In spite using one of the sharpest lenses we know and having a live view system that allows very precise focus, the E420 simply can't compete with the level of detail the 1000D is able to pull out of this scene. This further supports our assessment that the Olympus has a relatively strong anti-aliasing filter, while the 1000D has a relatively weak one.
