Let's start with a quick look at how the A720 IS compares with the A710 IS, its predecessor. In this section we've included studio comparisons at ISO 80, 400 and 800 (The A710 IS's highest setting).

As we've seen in other Canons that have moved from the company's 7.1MP sensor to its 8MP replacement, the image quality is pretty consistent between the two. Although there's not a huge amount in it there is a visible improvement; at base ISO, the 8MP sensor appears to resolve more detail and the A720 produces really very impressive images (we suspect the sharpening has been turned up a little, but there's undoubtedly more detail here). The amount of detail visible in the pastoral scene from the Baileys bottle is really very high and little in the way of corner softness appears in the crops taken from the edge of the frame.
