Top of camera controls

On top of the camera you'll find power button (which is recessed slightly into the camera top) along with a lamp which glows green to indicate the camera is powered up. Beside this is the shutter release button. The shutter release button has a very soft half-press and a fairly subtle full press position.

Rear of camera controls

On the back of the camera you'll find all of the major controls. At the top the mode dial which is used to select between record, play, scene or setup modes. Beside this is the paddle style zoom controller (zoom in record mode, thumbnail / magnify in play mode). To the left of the LCD monitor are the rest of the camera controls. In record mode the 4-way controller allows you to control camera settings or switch into image review mode, in play mode the 4-way controller is used to browse through images.

Mode Dial

SET UP	Setup Enters camera setup mode (described in more detail later).
	Movie Mode The DSC-P71 features the latest 320 x 240 MPEG HQX which allows you to record a movie clip of unlimited length (only storage space limited). Note that the P71 does not record audio with the movie.
	Playback Enters playback mode, this displays the last image/movie recorded. Cursor arrows can be used to scroll through images (other functions described later).
	Program Auto Exposure Automatic exposure mode, camera meters the scene and selects best combination of aperture and shutter speed (and ISO if set to Auto) to properly expose the image. Slowest shutter speed is 1/30 sec.
SCN	Scene Mode Exposure The DSC-P71 features three scene modes:  • Twilight (slowest shutter speed of 2 sec)  • Twilight Portrait (Slow Sync Flash; slowest shutter speed of 2 sec)  • Landscape

Buttons

W / T	Zoom / Magnify Zooms the camera lens towards telephoto (117 mm) or towards wide (39 mm). The zoom control itself is a single position button (non-proportional). In playback mode the zoom control doubles as a control for magnifying the displayed image or displaying thumbnails.
	Flash Selects flash mode: (Red-eye mode can be enabled via the Set Up menu)  • Auto Flash  • Flash Fill-in  • Flash Cancel
	Image review Instantly reviews the last image / movie, in this mode you can zoom into the image but not scroll between images on the Memory Stick, you'll have to switch to playback mode for that.
	Macro Focus Switches between normal; 50 cm (2 ft) - Infinity, and macro focus; 10 cm (3.9 in) - 50 cm (2 ft) range.
	Self-Timer Engages / Disengages the self-timer. Self-timer is cancelled after the next shot is taken.
MENU	Record Menu Enters record menu (detailed later).
DISPLAY/ LCD	Display Toggles LCD display mode either live preview with full detail overlay, live preview with simple detail or LCD off.
