Battery compartment

The battery compartment on the K20D is in the base of the hand grip behind a locking latch which fits flush when close but must be flipped up to open. The compartment door is spring loaded to open and features a small rubber o-ring ensuring a weather-proof seal when closed. In a change from the K10D, the K20D's battery latch is larger and rotates through 90 degrees, rather than 45, making it quicker and easier to use.

The D-LI50 Lithium-Ion rechargeable is also carried over, which is rated as having a capacity of 1620 mAh at 7.4V (12 Wh).

Secure Digital (SD/SDHC) compartment

The K20D supports SD and SDHC media, the compartment door is in the side of the hand grip and is opened using the same type of twisting lever lock as the battery compartment. Turn the lock and the compartment door springs open, the retention of the card is on a simple 'press to insert, press to remove' basis. There is a rubber seal on the body where the door meets it when closed (ensuring weatherproofing). SD cards provide capacities of up to 2 GB, SDHC for capacities of 4 GB or more.

Connections

On the left side of the camera behind another weather-proofed door are all of the camera's connectors. These are (from top to bottom); wired remote, combination USB 2.0 and video out and DC-IN (8.3 V). There's also a standard flash sync socket, the rubber cap from which you will lose the first time you use it.

Camera base / tripod mount

The base of the camera has a metal tripod mount aligned with the lens axis and focal plane, just to the left of this is the battery grip terminal, covered by a rubber bung in this image.

Pop-up flash

The K20D has a 'P-TTL' pop-up flash unit which has a manual catch-type release. The unit itself has a guide number of 13 and a field of view coverage of approximately 18 mm. Flash sync speed is 1/180 sec. The K10D doesn't have a dedicated AF assist lamp, instead it strobes the flash unit (if raised) to provide additional illumination to the AF system.

Hot-shoe

The K20D hot-shoe can be used with Pentax specific flash units to achieve P-TTL auto flash, high-speed sync and wireless (such as the AF540FGZ or AF360FGZ) or simply to provide a sync signal to third party flash or studio strobes. The new x-sync socket gives even more connection options.

Lens Mount

The K20D has a KAF2 bayonet lens mount which can take lenses with a KAF3, KAF2, KAF or KA mount lenses, it also provides an option to use the lens aperture ring. Pentax has substantially increased its range of DA and DA* 'designed for digital' lenses in recent years.

While the range may not be as expansive as some other brands', it covers most bases well and includes an interesting selection of primes and lenses designed to take into account the 1.5x 'focal length multiplier' that comes from using a sensor smaller than 35mm film. This includes lenses such as the DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 that covers a range equivalent to 75-202mm but weighs substantially less than a traditional 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.
