The top right of the camera is straightforward enough. At the very front is the main command dial, above this is the power / DOF preview (backlight) switch which surrounds the shutter release button. Below this are the program reset, drive mode and flash mode buttons. The function of each described in more detail below.

The left side of the camera has the mode / setting dial and below (surrounding) this is the metering mode selection. Note that the 'easy to use' or 'default' settings are indicated by the use of green, placing all controls into the green position ensures automatic point-and-shoot operation.
| Spot
metering Meters only a small area at the center of the frame. |

| Center-weighted
average metering Meters the entire frame but places more emphasis on the light level near the center of the frame. |

| 16-segment
metering Uses 16 different segments of the frame to evaluate the optimum exposure. |
| Auto Exposure In this mode the camera automatically selects aperture and shutter speed based on the current metered exposure value, exposure compensation and selected ISO sensitivity. This is the camera's fully automatic mode, program shift is not active in this mode. |

| P | Program Auto Exposure
( In this mode the camera automatically selects aperture and shutter speed based on the current metered exposure value, exposure compensation and selected ISO sensitivity. The *ist D has a unique program shift feature (hyper program) in that you can shift on shutter speed by turning the front command dial or aperture using the rear command dial. Simply press the program reset button to return to the program line. Example (turning rear dial):

Exposure ( In this mode you select the aperture and the camera will calculate the correct shutter speed depending on metered exposure, exposure compensation and ISO sensitivity. Turn the rear command dial to select aperture. The camera automatically calculates the appropriate shutter speed for correct exposure. (Exact range depends on lens used) |

Exposure ( In this mode you select the shutter speed and the camera will calculate the correct aperture depending on metered exposure, exposure compensation and ISO sensitivity. Turn the front command dial to select shutter speed. The camera automatically calculates the appropriate aperture for correct exposure.
