Resolution Chart Comparison
Comparison cameras:
- Panasonic DMC-FZ3 (3 MP, 12x zoom)
- Canon PowerShot S1 IS (3.2 MP, 10x zoom)
- Fuji FinePix S5000 Zoom (3.1 MP, 10x zoom)*
- Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z2 (4 MP, 10x zoom)
*the FinePix S5000 has a 3.1 MP effective SuperCCD chip that outputs 6MP images - these measurements were taken in 6MP mode.
Shots here are of the PIMA/ISO 12233 standard resolution
test chart (more of which are available in our comparison
database). This resolution chart allows us to measure the actual performance
of the lens and sensor system. It measures the ability of the camera to
resolve lines at gradually higher resolutions and enables us to provide
a definitive value for comparison purposes. Values on the chart are 1/100th
lines per picture height. Thus a value of 15 equates to 1500 lines per picture
height.
Studio light, cameras set to auto, settings all factory
default. If possible aperture was selected for optimum sharpness. Exposure compensation
+0.7 EV to +1.3 EV.

Very clean images with plenty of resolution - the best of the four cameras on test here by a fair margin. The result is all the more impressive given that the 12x optic on the FZ3 offers a considerably wider range than any of the other cameras in the group. The Venus II processor has ensured virtually no artefacts are visible, and the Leica lens is obviously doing its job. Very good results indeed for a sub-$400 super zoom.
