On the right side of the camera (from the back) is a small flush fitting
door behind which are the Video out and USB connectors. On the left side
behind a rubber grommet type cover is the DC-IN connector (for optional
AC adapter). I was really pleased to see Olympus implementing a flush
fitting door over the Video and USB connectors but sad to see the smooth
lines of the left side of the camera spoiled by the rubber DC-IN connector
and cover.
Lens
The C-50 Zoom's lens slides smoothly out of the body as soon as
the front cover is open, as you close the cover it is blocked internally
until the lens has fully retracted (no chance of trapping it). The
lens has an equivalent focal length range of 38 to 114 mm with a
maximum aperture of F2.8 at wide angle and F4.8 at telephoto (about
what we have come to expect from these tiny lens systems). It's
worth saying that I do like Olympus's attention to detail in giving
the lens a metallic look finish.
Base / Tripod Mount
On the base of the camera is a centrally located plastic tripod
mount. Obviously once the camera is mounted on a tripod you won't
be able to change the battery or xD-Picture card. On the plus side
we didn't detect any tilting of the camera when screwed to a tripod
head.
Flash
In the top right corner of the front of the camera is the flash
unit, it has a quoted range of 0.2 - 3.4 m (7.9 in - 11.2 ft) at
wide angle and 0.3 - 2.0 m (11.8 in - 6.6 ft) at telephoto (ranges
quoted at ISO 160).
Remote Control
Supplied with the camera is this Infrared remote control, it provides
control over zoom and shutter release in record mode as well as
browsing and magnification in playback mode.
Kudos to Olympus for continuing the inclusion of this useful accessory.
