Nikon D60 vs. Canon EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi)

Camera settings:

  • Nikon D60: Nikkor 50 mm F1.8 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters, Self-Timer

  • Canon EOS 400D: Canon EF 50 mm F1.4 lens, Aperture Priority, ISO 100
JPEG Large/Fine, Manual WB, Default Parameters (Standard PS), Self-Timer
Nikon D60
Canon EOS 400D
3,633 KB JPEG (3872 x 2592)
3,351 KB JPEG (3888 x 2592)

What we said about the D40X is still true (in fact with the D60's softer output even more so); the Canon EOS 400D's more aggressive sharpening and perhaps slightly better demosaicing deliver just a little more detail across the image, edges are better defined and some of the finer details of the Bailey's label crop missing from the D60 shot are visible (just) in the EOS shot. That said it would be extremely difficult to differentiate these differences in anything but the very largest print, and all but impossible once the Nikon image had been sharpened to match the Canon.
