All of the connectors are located on the left side of the body (from the rear) protected by rubber covers. Top-to-bottom we have the GPS/cable remote connector, which takes the same MC-DC2 remote as the D90, then the fairly standard USB A/V out and finally an HDMI socket for all that high-definition outputting you might wish to do.
Camera Base / Tripod Mount
Just as you'd expect of a modern DSLR, there's a metal tripod socket in line with the lens axis. There's enough texture and corrugation to ensure it grips your tripod plate firmly.
The D5000 has an electronic-release pop-up flash which will either raise automatically (in Auto or one of the Scene modes depending on the flash mode) or manually by pressing the flash button. This button also doubles as the flash mode button, by holding it and turning the command dial. The flash has a guide number of 12 (m at ISO 100) - as have the D60 and D90 - and raises approximately 80 mm above the lens's central axis. Unlike the D90 and above, the D5000 cannot act as a controller for Nikon's wireless 'Creative Lighting System' flash setup.
Lens Mount / Sensor
Below on the left you can see the D5000's lens mount with the mirror down, on the right with mirror up and shutter open (exposing the sensor). Lenses are inserted twisted clockwise and lock in place with an anticlockwise turn. As with recent small Nikons, there is no AF motor built into the body, meaning only lenses with autofocus motors will AF on the D5000. All three major third-party lens makers (Sigma, Tamron and Tokina), now sell lenses with built-in AF motors for Nikon.
Self-cleaning sensor unit
The D5000 has the same automatic sensor cleaning system as found on the D90. It works in the same manner as other implementations, piezoelectric elements vibrate a cover filter which should in theory remove any light dust particles attached to it. It also has the D60's airflow system that aims to blow loose dust away from the sensor.
