Connections
When you first get the Coolpix 5400 in your hands spend
a few minute locating all of the connectors, the reason I mention this
is that they're illogically placed all around the body. It's almost as
though Nikon were running out of surface real estate and simply had to
put the connectors where they could. Why oh why we couldn't have all the
connectors in one place behind a proper hinged door I'm really not sure.
In any case, in the images below from top left (viewed from the rear);
DC-IN (top right side of camera), A/V out (bottom left side), USB (top
left side).

Lens
The Coolpix 5400 features an all new four times optical
zoom lens but maintains the 5000's wide angle 28 mm which will I'm sure
be popular with many hunting for wide angle capability in a high resolution
digital camera (real estate is one application which comes to mind). Compared
to lenses from the 'other two' cameras in competition the Coolpix 5400
is the only one to have native sub 30 mm wide angle, however the Canon's
lens is faster (larger max. aperture) at both wide angle and telephoto.
The lens extends 15 mm (0.6 in) at wide angle and 33 mm (1.3 in) at telephoto.

Base / Tripod Mount
 |
On the base of the Coolpix 5400 is a metal tripod mount surrounded
by a rubber 'shoe'. The location of the mount is good for ensuring
a flat placement on a tripod plate, however it's not in line with
the center of the lens making it less useful when shooting panoramas
from a tripod. The rubber shoe in my opinion wasn't large enough
as the camera tended to pivot or wobble around it, it's also not
as sticky as the rubber used on the hand grip.

Internal Flash
 |
The Coolpix 5400's flash unit sits above and to the left of the
lens, just to the right of this is the flash exposure sensor (a
far better location than the 5000). The flash has a specified range
of 4.5 m (14.8 ft) at wide angle and 2.8 m (9.2 ft) at telephoto.
|

Flash Hot-shoe
The Coolpix 5400 has a standard Nikon flash hotshoe and supports a variety
of Nikon Speedlights; l Nikon Speedlight SB-80DX/50DX/30/27/23/22s. Note
that the hotshoe can also be used to trigger third party flash systems
or studio flash systems (via an adapter), although these will probably
only work correctly in manual exposure mode.
