The Coolpix 4500 offers a wide variety of resolution and
image format options. You can choose from JPEG (three compression levels)
or TIFF at 2272 x 1704 (full native resolution). JPEG image sizes are
2272 x 1704, 2272 x 1520 (3:2 aspect ratio), 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960,
1024 x 768 and 640 x 480.
To give an impression of what some of the combinations
of image size and quality produce the table below is a cross reference
of some of them:
2272 x 1704 TIFF
2272 x 1704 JPEG Fine
2272 x 1704 JPEG Normal
2272 x 1704 JPEG Basic
1600 x 1200 JPEG Fine
1280 x 960 JPEG Fine
1024 x 768 JPEG Fine
640 x 480 JPEG Fine
Images below are cropped 240 x 100 area of the image magnified
200% (nearest neighbour).

The majority of purposes there is very little visible difference
between JPEG Fine and TIFF mode. I don't expect many 4500 owners to be
using TIFF, but if it weren't there we'd certainly see a lot of people
asking for it! After that there is a slight degradation in quality using
the Normal setting and a very visible degradation at Basic. The lower
image sizes will of course have that crisp sharp look although I was a
little disappointed that 640 x 480 JPEG Fine had as many visible JPEG
artifacts as it does.
