On the right side of the camera (from the rear) is the
Secure Digital card compartment. This door has a particularly nice action
with a smooth slide to the back before springing open on its metal hinge.
Inside is a push-to-insert push-to-remove SD slot.
Connections
On the left side of the camera is the connectors comparment
covered by another nice solid door which has a smooth satisfying action
and spring loaded hinge. Inside you will find the USB 2.0 (Hi Speed) terminal,
combined A/V and wired remote terminal and DC-IN connector.
Lens
The Digilux 2's lens has to be one of its primary selling
points, it's a beautifully crafted high quality 28 - 90 mm equiv. (3.2x
zoom) F2.0 - F2.4 lens with a solid feel and mechanically linked zoom.
On the barrel itself there are three rings; zoom, focus and aperture.
The last two are locked in the 'A' (auto) position, to switch to manual
focus and/or aperture priority just press the lock button on the ring
and turn it, nothing could be simpler or better thought out. Supplied
with the camera is a clip-on hood and two lens caps (one for the lens
without hood, one with).
Base / Tripod Mount
On the base of the camera is a metal tripod mount which is in line
with the middle of the lens and (we assume) the focal plane of the
sensor. This makes shooting panoramas straightforward and something
you should be able to achieve on a standard tripod. The rest of
the base is left fairly plain, no rubber feet or additional grip.
Pop-up Flash
The Digilux 2 has a fairly unique pop-up flash which
can be placed in either the straight forward (direct) position or facing
up for ceiling bounced (indirect) flash shots. In the direct position
at ISO 100 the flash has a specified range of 0.5 - 4.8 m (1.6 - 15.7
ft) at wide angle and 0.5 - 4.0 m (1.6 - 13.1 ft) at telephoto. It's worth
noting that because of the height of the Digilux 2's flash it is less
prone to causing red-eye (which is worse for flash units near to the lens).
Flash Hot-shoe
On top of the camera is an ISO flash shoe which can be used with
third party flash (sync only) or dedicated Leica flash units such
as the SF 24D.
