Resolution Chart Comparison
Comparison cameras:
- Fujifilm FinePix S5500/5100 (4MP, 10x zoom)
- Nikon Coolpix 4800 (4 MP, 8.3x zoom)
- Canon PowerShot S1 IS (3.2 MP, 10x zoom)
- Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z2 (4 MP, 10x zoom)
Shots here are of the PIMA/ISO 12233 standard resolution
test chart (more of which are available in our comparison
database). This resolution chart allows us to measure the actual performance
of the lens and sensor system. It measures the ability of the camera to
resolve lines at gradually higher resolutions and enables us to provide
a definitive value for comparison purposes. Values on the chart are 1/100th
lines per picture height. Thus a value of 15 equates to 1500 lines per picture
height.
Studio light, cameras set to auto, settings all factory
default. If possible aperture was selected for optimum sharpness. Exposure compensation
+0.7 EV to +1.3 EV.

Excellent resolution - amongst the best results we've seen from any of the super zoom cameras, even those, such as the Kodak DX7590, with higher pixel counts. Perhaps not surprisingly, the results are considerably better than the S5500/S5100's predecessor (the Super CCD-equipped S5000, which boasts an interpolated output of 6 megapixels). The images are not the cleanest we've seen, with moiré visible at the very highest frequencies and some evidence of sharpening artifacts (though of course the sharpness can be turned down in-camera), but given the price and lens range of this camera, one cannot help but be impressed.
