I am using this lens for over 2 years now. First on a A700, currently on a a77. It is a good lens, fast autofocus, very sharp images, little or no distortion. The enormous zoom capacity from wide angle 18mm to the tele of 250 mm is astonishing and for daily use very good. The one and only little minus is the noise it produces when focussing. When using the in-build video camera of the a77, the noise of the continuous focusing is disturbing.

This lens is ok for average snapshot photos only. I experienced extreme distortion with wide angle landscape shots. I also experienced corner cropping in the 30 to 50 mm focal lengths. There was also very noticable color aberration problems at far edges of the frame. With the copy that I had the far left of the frame was out of focus with the rest of the frame and an f stop of f11 or smaller was needed to be sharp from corner to corner. I recently picked this up and am very happy with it as an all rounder lens on my a55 (410 GBP). Given the right settings and good light (typically stopped down to around f5.6 to 8) its very sharp across the frame at nearly the whole focal length range. It suffers from a bit of distortion / vignetting at the extreme ends but this is easily corrected PP (particularly if you have DxO Optical 6.5 as this is a supported lens on the a55 body).
