Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM

This little lens is a real winner. The lens itself is "plastic-fantastic"all over the place (including the mount). Although it does not feel nearly as solid as the beercan, it has the advantage of being very lightweight. Plastic doesn't mean it's bad, it is solid enough. The lens is designed for APS-C camera's. The optical quality is really good. Light fall off: Some vignetting at f/1.8, but is soon disappers when you stop down. At f/2.8 it is as good as gone. CA: Same as with the light fall ...

At this focal length, I think the only lens that renders this lens inferiror is the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8, so I think that says a lot for a lens @ this price! Even as an owner of the Zeiss, I still ponder on re-purchasing this lens! A no brainer if you are even thinking about purchasing it! Problems: Flimsy, manual focus requires accuracy of a brain surgeon's hands.

Optically it's capable of great things. It does a very good job in low-light conditions, it's great for portraits and also for more general shooting. Problems: The front element of the lens is wobbly. I guess that's got to do with the fact that it's cheap and plastic but so far I haven't seen any malfunction with the optics. But this problem might just be my copy.

An easy choice lens, I got mine for 140 GBP new. That means a light plastic body, a plastic mount BUT a bitingly sharp general purpose prime that's pretty fast for a 35mm. Colours are good, pleasant bokeh, good in low light, surprisingly sharp wide open, sharp across the APS C frame when stopped down.
