This is a very good lens for Alpha users looking to upgrade over their kit zoom. The versatility of the focal length range goes a long way towards making up for the inevitable optical compromises, and as such the lens easily earns our recommendation.

When we initially posted results of the pre-production version of this lens, my suggestion that the 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 could be a better lens optically than the Sony 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 DT caused a bit of a stir on various camera and lens message boards.
