PIX 2015

Sony Mavica FD-200

Announced Jan 8, 2002 •
2 megapixels | 2.5 screen | 37 – 111 mm (3×)

The camera has a number of interesting features. You can shoot in Tiff mode instead of JPEG which yields uncompressed pics. There is a GIF clip mode which lets you shoot up to 10 shots and then it strings them together to make an animated GIF, advancing each shot in about 1/2 second. This is good for a web site. You can take a 2 megapixel shot and copy it to reduced 640x480 mode, which is also better for web sites. The camera itself doubles as a USB floppy drive, and when I plugged it ...

Paired with a Microsoft TV Photo Viewer, the FD200 lets me take unlimited images at virtually no cost when compared with film (about 30 pictures on each 25 cent floppy--less than a penny per picture!). There's no computer to hassle with, I can make disk copies in-camera to share with others, and the results for my application are superb. I'm not much of a photographer so I wanted something that is very easy to use and takes great pictures at the touch of a button. I couldn't ask for any better than this! All my pictures come out excellent and I get 4x6 prints at Target which look awesome. Problems: Only problem is the battery that comes with the camera doesn't last too long, but I solved that by buying the Sony accessory kit which comes with 3 floppy disks, a high capacity battery and a camera bag.

I've had this camera for almost a year and I don't have any complaints about it at all. I also have a Sony DPP-EX50 photo printer and the pictures I print from this camera look excellent. I have no plans to get rid of it anytime soon. Problems: The only problem I've had is just with indoor pictures, the photos come out way too dark (no flash) even with alot of light in the room. With the flash they look good but wash out macro photos.

For the type of camera this is, it's pretty decent. Even though it's only 2 megapixels it takes pretty good, sharp photos with good lighting. Very easy to use with floppy disks and the memory stick slot is great for when you want to store alot of photos. Battery life is about 80-90 minutes with constant use. Since it is now March 2005 and this camera has been discontinued by Sony, you can find great deals on it as I did. Problems: Every once in a while when zooming out, the zoom button ...

I love my Sony Mavica FD200! I've had it for 2 years now and I've taken many thousands of pictures and have been very pleased with the results. Including one of a hummingbird that I think is fabulous that I will try to include on here. http://www.photodex.com/sharing/viewfile.html?fl=1905330&alb=0 I chose the 2.0 not only for the price, but the fact that I would not be enlarging any pictures larger than 5X7's. The macro pictures are excellent. I also like the ease of operation, compared to ...
