Hello all, I'm in the process of choosing a lens for my Pentax K-50 for a backcountry hiking trip west and could use some solid input from those more seasoned. I've been using the kit lenses that came with the K-50 and on the whole I am pleased with their performance given they are kit lenses. However, I noticed that images are softer and a bit less sharp than I desire, especially on the 18mm end. My key needs in a lens(es) are: Sharpness, Low light performance, at least 35mm (18mm would be...

Hi, I've decided that I want to take up landscape photography especially when I go hiking.  I've done a lot of looking at different cameras and decided that the K-50/K-30 is the only real competitor in the sub $1000 category for me on account of weather sealing. It looks to be a great camera, my only concern is that 16.2 MP might not be enough for producing stunning high-res photos that I want so that I can use them for computer wallpapers and smaller prints.  I'd also like to do some large...

I have a pretty outdated Nikon D40 and I'm looking to upgrade. I've looked at many, many DSLRs out there right now and I have no idea what to get. I prefer to stay Nikon since I already have lens and I'm looking for a body only. I have looked at the D5300, D3300, and the Pentax K-50. Nikon looked superior in image quality to the K-50 so maybe not the K-50. I also saw a refurbished D7000 for $619 which I am seriously considering. Budget is a bit tight so I'm trying to keep it under $700. I'm...

Hi all, I'm considering my first dSLR and coming from a combination of a Nokia Lumia 920 phone (crazy good pics considering it's a phone) and an old Panasonic Lumix Z28 superzoom. *LOVE* the telephoto reach of the Z28, but I've never been entirely happy with the color it captures and it's not quite as versatile as I'd like. My primary uses for a new camera are: Landscape & Nature - lots of outdoor shots, water, clouds, etc. and hiking in the mountains Wildlife - this was the main reason I...

I've read countless posts asking the same question ("can you recommend a camera for a beginner") with different answers and I've done quite a bit of reading up on the different cameras I've discovered through online reviews as well as threads in these forums. I've reached the point where all of the reviews are starting to blur a bit. Here's a little bit of background. I'm an amateur photographer who enjoys taking pictures. I have no illusions of ever becoming a professional but I do enjoy...

I am looking to buy my first DSLR (upgrading from a point and shoot). I am looking to do this on a budget, as I am a graduate school student and need to be semi responsible with my spending. I of course want to purchase the best camera for my needs and budget, and after much research I have narrowed an overwhelming list down to two cameras. The Pentax K-50 (with the 18-55 and 50-200 lens kit) or the Nikon D3200 (with the 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR lens kit). At this point I am having a hard time...

Hello all, I am looking for help finding a budget lens ( $250-$300 range tops) for taking shots at night on a trip out west backcountry camping in one of the National Parks. I will be using a tripod for sure but am unsure what lens would enable me to capture the landscape/sky at night. I recently purchased a pentax K-50 kit that comes with 2 kit lenses (see link for lens info). I chose the camera for its weatherproofing and price...

I have almost settled on the K-50 as a replacement for my Canon XTi. As I will be using the camera mainly for outdoors and nature photography, often hiking in the rain or from a kayak, the k-50’s weatherproofing is a key feature, as is its value and price range (limited budget). I will also require some significant telephoto capability, and lens selection seems to be somewhat limited at this time. The Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR lens seems to be well rated, and is reasonably priced at...
