I am looking to buy my first DSLR (upgrading from a point and shoot). I am looking to do this on a budget, as I am a graduate school student and need to be semi responsible with my spending. I of course want to purchase the best camera for my needs and budget, and after much research I have narrowed an overwhelming list down to two cameras. The Pentax K-50 (with the 18-55 and 50-200 lens kit) or the Nikon D3200 (with the 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR lens kit). At this point I am having a hard time...

Hello all, I am looking for help finding a budget lens ( $250-$300 range tops) for taking shots at night on a trip out west backcountry camping in one of the National Parks. I will be using a tripod for sure but am unsure what lens would enable me to capture the landscape/sky at night. I recently purchased a pentax K-50 kit that comes with 2 kit lenses (see link for lens info). I chose the camera for its weatherproofing and price...

I have almost settled on the K-50 as a replacement for my Canon XTi. As I will be using the camera mainly for outdoors and nature photography, often hiking in the rain or from a kayak, the k-50’s weatherproofing is a key feature, as is its value and price range (limited budget). I will also require some significant telephoto capability, and lens selection seems to be somewhat limited at this time. The Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR lens seems to be well rated, and is reasonably priced at...

Hello, I am a hobby photographer, nothing very serious but I want to improve my pictures. I  have recently been looking into dSLR cameras. I am not a complete beginner as I have been shooting with an old 35mm Minolta SRT-101, a camera which I love dearly. However due to weight, availability of film and film development makes a dSLR a tempting proposition. Also I'm sick of using compact cameras or even worse using my cellphone to take digital photos. I have been reading reviews and to be...

I currently have a "point and shoot" camera, but reviewing photos which I took years ago with an old SLR I want to get back into more serious photography. I hike so weather resistance and weight are important. If money were no object I would probably get an Olympus OM-D EM5, but I notice that a pentax K50 has comparable performance and is a  lot cheaper. I know that it is subjective to a degree, but would I find the K50 too bulky and heavy in the long run? I see lots of conflicting things in...

Hi all, I am looking for a replacement for my current Canon S3IS superzoom. I've got this camera for about 7 years now and it has always served me well, exept...... low light situations. A few years ago i became father and started taking more pictures of my family in and around the house. The S3IS is great to handle in daylight, however, when going inside and especially during the winter -period i pulled my hairs out because i couldn't take decent pictures without flash. I know the camera...

Hello, I currently own a Sony RX100 (first generation), and while it's a good camera for it's size, I now want to upgrade to something more serious, because I am finding it limiting, so I am looking at either Mirrorless cameras or a DSLR.  At first I thought about micro 4/3, but wasn't convinced that it would be worth to upgrade from the RX, so I began to look at  APS-C sized cameras such as the sony NEX-5N, which I can get quite cheap second hand. If I go this route, I would sell the...

Going to travel with my family this coming summer and was wondering what gear I should bring that would give the best results while keeping weight low. Mostly would shoot some sceneries and landscapes, and of course my family, my kids, etc. Here's my dilemma so far: 2 camera 2 lenses combo: Olympus OM-D E-M5 + Olympus 12-40/2.8 Pentax K-50 + 50-135/2.8 Which basically covers 24mm to 200mm in constant F2.8 aperture. Both cameras have on camera flash btw 1 camera 1 lens + flash combo: Pentax...
