Pentax Optio S40

Burst rate poor and significant barrell effect on some shots. Problems: Serious problems with battery life. Anything from 40 shots to 4 and the fresh batteries (rechargeable or disposable) are dead. Batteries may drain in the camera without taking shots. Camera effectively worthless without stack of batteries (6-8) on standby!

Good camera, got it on a discontinued sale. Very impressed with the compact size, solid construction and practical features. The camera ate up the most expensive (around $8 or $9 aussie dollars) non-rechargeable batteries in around 1/2 an hour. Relative good price and good features. It is a tiny and very beautiful camera. It fits easily in a pocket. Movies are good and sound recording excelent (30 fps with sound limited to card size). Problems: Focus during the night is poor and noise is annoying. Images when 100% view size shows noise. Focus system slow and not practical. It takes some time to recharge flash.

DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA IT IS A DUD! Having previously had a Kodak DC3400 for 4 years I was looking for an upgraded camera with the ability to carry around easily and use indoors and at night. I purchased the Optio S40 after a lot of looking around, based on its size, the fact that it uses AA batteries, reports on previous models from Pentax, and new features. I've used it for 4 months now, with a 256 MB SD card. I haven't been disappointed. It's truly amazing how well a $299 camera that's this small can work.
