Olympus E-500 / EVOLT E-500

Announced Sep 26, 2005 •
8 megapixels | 2.5 screen | Four Thirds sensor

Bought this cam in Europe 2 months ago, it is a Made in China, in Europe it seems all Olym E500's are Made in China. Kit lens is 17.5-45mm, seems cheapest lens. Pros: -- ergonomic build -- rich features -- easy to use menu -- clear & large LCD screen (but see problem below) -- image quality, hard to say, I have never produced sharp image as sample ones provided by dpreview.com. Natural color. Problems: Cons -- plastic body, not very solid feel -- small viewfinder -- difficult focus, minimum 3 ...

I've been using this camera for 2 months. I like it so much! I bought the 2 lens kit at unbeatable price for a DSLR with tons of functions and good image quality. The auto WB mode is a bit unpredictable, so I use it on a fixed mode, so it has a workaround. Unfortunately the 4/3 system doesn't have wide variety of lensens in the shops, but the main requirements of an amateur photographer are fulfilled at a normal price. I also purchased a 35mm macro and I have a DCR-250 macro lens for tiny ...

Was just as good as I'd hoped it would be, and better. Setting white balance properly is more crucial than I'd experienced with point and shoots. Now that I have trained myself to do this, everything is golden (pun intended, maybe) There are only 2 non-obvious drawbacks for anyone considering trading up from a compact camera: 1. You will need to get a macro lens or an extension tube if you like shooting macros. I miss that feature of my compact camera. 2. You probably cannot take unobtrusive, ...

Very nice camera. Actually, I like it for its small size and weight. I don't drop cameras on the floor every day. :) I'd like more controls implemented in hardware (buttons, knobs and wheels) instead of menu.

It an excellent camera with features galore. I use the apture mode quite a bit and the C-AF setting for continuous focus for fast action and kids. I bought the kit with both lenses and switch back and forth quite a bit and that led to a problem......... Problems: The camera quit focusing, both in auto and manual mode. After much time trouble shooting and getting no where fast, i called tech support at Olympus. The second tech i talked to nailed it down! He had me take the lens off, inspect ...

I've had my e-500 for about 8 months. I learn more about the camera almost everyday. I hardly ever shoot anything on "auto" anymore. However, that's the beauty of the camera. Beginners can set it on "auto" and get beautiful shots almost everytime. But, with a little practice and a little manual tweaking, almost everyone can get "pro" shots almost everytime. This camera with the kit lenses is easily the best value in dSLRs! Problems: The viewfinder is small. Plan on buying the ME-1 magnifier. ...

I am retiring my Fujifilm 4900Z for this one. After shopping dpreview for months and subtle Father's Day hints, my wife and boys bought a winner (Thanks)! I like the ergonomic grip and most of the control placement. The large LCD screen is great although the viewfinder is somewhat small and tunnel-like; tough in low light situations. The kit is the way to go with 2 high quality lenses, software and cables that any amateur would need. Want something better? Pony up the bucks in favor of the ...

Consruction feels very solid and the ergonmics are outstanding. Kit lenses are quite nice. The 40-150 is a real star among value priced lenses. I've been extremely please overall with the image quality. There has been a bit of a learning curve for me, but I have no doubts that this is the right camera to take my photography skills to the next level. Best purchase i've made in a few years. Problems: my only complaint is the one-touch white balance button, but if my thumb wasn't so big, it ...
