12.3 megapixels | 2.7" screen | Four Thirds sensor

The mid-range Olympus E-30 features a 12MP Live MOS sensor and 2.7"" tilt and swivel LCD. It also incorporates Live View with Contrast AF, Image Stabilization, 5fps continuous shooting and shutter speeds of up to 1/8000th sec. The E-30 also introduced the world to Olympus's 'Art Filters'. Other features include Multiple Exposure mode and a choice of 9 aspect ratios. The E-30 is packed to bursting with features; some (in-body IS, articulated screen) you'll appreciate every day, others (live view magnification that actually shows something useful, digital 'spirit level') that will prove more useful to some than others, and a lot (Art Filters, Multiple Exposures, some of the Aspect Ratio options) that veer dangerously close to novelty status, especially on a camera at this level.

As for picture quality, again there's a lot to like - even if there are also a few weak areas. The JPEG quality is superb, with excellent dynamic range and a slightly more subtle approach to color and contrast than we're used to from Olympus, giving results that look great 'out of the can' but respond well to post processing too.

Opinion: This is not a review it is a hands-on, I have been about 3 hours with a friend that works here at Olympus, drinking coffee and talking.

Don't have much to say, but the E-30 felt good in my hands, the size is optimal for me and liked the constuction also, as the sound of the shutter at 5fps.

The AF is good, I fount it fast and accurate.

The metering the same, is good to my taste.

The OVF is good and the LCD the same.

About the sealing, my friend told me to splash it with the mineral water bottle heavily and no problems, I was inspired on this by some e-3 videos I saw.
He let me do it with water, but I could not put the e-30 on the ground and put my weight on it with the feets, I saw this too with a e-3 body on a video.

Anyway the camera looks and feel robust enought.

I liked the ergonomics, and the buttons are well placed.
The few shots I made I looked in is office and look ok for me, but 3 hours with the talking is a short amount of time for taking final conclusions.

Liked the 14-54 II, but I can not compare with the old one, because never used one.

I saw the art filters in action but they are just a few, in my opinion olympus should have done 12 or 18,20... art filters.

The conclusion on this hands-on is that the camera is very good.

For me is Highly Recommended, let's see what Dpreview says.

Opinion: This review was based on my 7-day usage of the E-30,
as requested by Olympus Malaysia. My reviews appear
in the local forums, and also my personal blog,

http://thru-the-zuiko.blogspot.com/2009/01/e-30-
short-review.html.

This is an excerpt from the blog:

Overall, the E-30 is a fun camera to use. The
lightweight setup at just over 1kg with the 14-54mk2,
coupled with the heavyfeight features will just be
more than enough for aspiring creative shooters. Carry
along an FL-36R, it will be a formidable portable combo
indeed. The free-angle LCD will only leave your own
imagination as the limitation, and with one of the
fastest AF system in the business, it will not disappoint
to get "that"shot!

If you are an E-xx0 user, this camera is the perfect
model for further expanding your photographic and
creative skills. If you are an E-3 user, like myself, then
this camera is perfect for backup and also for those
JPEG moments.

My personal impression is that if you are a wedding
photographer, this camera is one of the best to get!

Problems: Olympus only let me use it for 7 days. :(

Opinion: Based on an extended three-day use of the camera. I was pretty impressed with how
fast the camera is and how well the ergonmics are (I normally use a Fuji S3 and a
Pentax ist D.) I have little or no complaints about the camera, if not the DR (or lack
there of.) That is why I only rated it a 4 star, because noise performance and
resolution are very good.

I only gave it a 3 for value of money, because no matter how fond I am of the
camera, I can only think that it is overvalued a little, but prices may (and probably
should) drop.
