Opinion: I bought this Camera during a vacation - My wife wanted underwater pictures.
The Camera is working perfect under water - No problems there. But the lag time of this camera makes it close to useless. I have pictures of fish tails and splash rings from jumping Dolphins - and believe me - I tried hard to catch the right moment.
This camera is only good for taking still pictures.

Problems: Lag times over 1.5 sec reminds me of the first digital cameras from the last century.

Opinion: Bought this camera as a underwater snap and shoot for upcoming Hawaii trip with some snorkeling planned. I like the small size (my wife refuses to carry a "big" camera). It seemed to have good specs and would do what we wanted on trip. The buttons are a little small, especially the power button and the menu didn't seem well laid out and easy to move through. The camera is very slow to make shots with and the delay seems to take forever.

Problems: I didn't get a chance to review it's waterproof nature because 4 days into our vacation after stopping at a scenic spot, I powered on the camera and a black dead zone/spot appeared in the middle of the screen. At first I thought it was something on the lense, but after checking that we concluded that the sensor itself had gone dead right in the middle. It looks like a black hole or something from a sci-fi film. Of course we are after the 14 day return/exchange time from Best Buy, so we will have to try out the manufacture warranty program.
I am glad we took along an older Canon Powershot A620. It worked fine the rest of the trip (except no water shots of course). I can't say enough how dissapointed we are with this Olympus 8010. After maybe 2 weeks from purchase the sensor goes dead, maybe its a good deal we didnt get a chance to take any underwater shots. It we were able to exchange/refund, I would not get this camera again but would use the difference to get something else.

Opinion: I get this camera instead of the 8000,becouse my 8000 get soped, and give me black spots in the pictures.I send it back to olympus, and get the 8010 instead.

5 weeks to exchange an camera, not acceptable, however I get an new unit the 8010 instead.
The batterie door is moved from the bottem to the right side, and it seem to me is is allot better closed then 8000
the camera have an lock on the batterie department.
the camera look and feel the same as 8000,but actual it is an upgrade.
Picture qality is better on the 8010 ,however nothing to whrite at home.way to mush pixels cramped on this tinny sensor.
resulting in noise at ISO 80 in good light, and alot of pixels smearing becouse of internal noise reduction,Yes even ISO 80

The wierd thing is shutter speed is to low in good light, becouse 8010 use in good light sunny conditions F/10 and an shutter speed of only 1/30,and nightmare if you move abit.
The shutter button,is to strong, and couse movement, thad together with 1/30 ste is an exelent candidate to get blurie pictures.
The camera do not allow for lower F/ settings.
no manuel settings aviable, just auto, and P mode with is also auto.

The LCD screen is better then on the 8000,seem to me it have more light, and is good viewable in strong sunny conditions.
the body is an nice looking camera.good portable, and good sealings.
You have some settings like macro super macro, and alot of Scenes you can set on this camera.
White balange continue shooting, and exposure compensations.

Batterie live is good, but not great, expecial when using flash.
the menu system is slow, and everything go from the menu somtimes with more then 5/6 pushes to move it to where you go.
By the time you have your setting, there is nothing in the frame anymore.

All by all nice looking camera, and everything is sayed.

Problems: Slow startup.
Slow focus.
Slow whriting.
Picture qality is poor.
Have to wait for boot up,with stupid text on the screen.
Camera sounds look like cartoons.
Camera not usable abouve ISO 200 or you have to print verry small.
100% view is terrible, fussie looking pictures viewed at 100%
noise smearing, and alot of lost detail.
The pictures are abit sharper then 8000,however there is more softness in the corners on the 8010,not helping with more pixels.

No external batterie charger, not good, becouse soon or late the door will leak again.
you have to open the door to get the camera charged.
This is just stupid.
Better was an external connection to charge the camera.
Buttons are ok exept the fire button, need to press to hard.

Exposure and overall color is good.

Opinion: I enjoy snorkling, and the -10m spec was ideal to me.
However, the overall terribly slow response of this camera,
from shutter lag to autofocusing reminds me of the first/second generation digital cameras I bougth and decided that digital photography was not for me.
Very solidly built.
Reasonable picture quality.

Problems: Very, very slow start up,shutter response, autofocus and
download to memory. Internal instrucuion manual useless.
Would not recommend to anyone.

Opinion: The 8010 is my 4th waterproof camera. I have a Pentax WP33, Pentax 720SW, Olympus 1030. I bought the 8010 to replace the 1030 which looks like it’s been dragged behind a truck – but that’s ok, it’s not meant to be a fashion statement. I need a tough camera and the 8010 has a better waterproof door & lock. I’ll be happy if I get two years from the 8010. There will always be a better camera released after you’ve just purchased one. The 14mp resolution gives acceptable images. A4’s come out ok and 6 x 4’s are great. If I need a bigger or better quality image I’ll use my canon DSLR. Colours are accurate & battery life is ok. Movies are great & you can now use the zoom button when filming (you do get a bit of mech noise when zooming). Using SD cards instead of the 2gb limited XD cards is also great.

Problems: The ib software on the camera crashes on my computer when I try to run it. Haven’t heard back from Olympus yet about a fix. So I down loaded the Olympus Master 2 software but this loads up automatically when I plug in the camera even though this option is off in Olympus Master 2 options. If I don’t hear from Olympus soon I’ll remove the program & continue to use my existing software. There is a user manual on the camera’s internal memory which you can access buy pushing the “?” button. The manual is useless & a waste of memory.

Compared to the 1030 the 8010 takes longer to startup & longer to save to memory when a shot is taken. The button to take the photos is really hard to push. The multiple shot option is also a lot slower than on the 1030. Some operation selections have been moved from the joystick on the back & you have to choose them from the right side of the screen menu. E.g. macro, flash on/off, exposure comp. These are the ones you use the most so they should be easy to get to. The menu system doesn’t do it for me. Why would Olympus change a perfectly good menu system. I find the TAP control is to sensitive. There is a calibration process you should use but it’s still too sensitive. If I pass the camera to one of my kids there’s a good chance that a setting will be disturbed. Just don’t use the TAP control.

STOP THE PRESSES!! 30th May 2010. I've decided to give this camera to my kids. I've bought a Sony TX5, read my review.

Opinion: I purchased the camera just before my holidays as a supplement to my Canon DSLR. I wanted a solid waterproof camera to carry all time without being worried about rain, dust and temperature.
The construction is OK, it is a solid camera and there is more than enough features. The menu is logic and easy to use and understand. Battery life is OK but not overwhelming.

Problems: The camera turned out to be an annoying experience. In one word it is SLOW.
The start up time is long, the AF is slow, the lens is slow.
And the glossy chrome front is vulnerable and get instantly scratches, not very Tough or Stylus.
Sold it after two month for half of the purchased price.
