Opinion: This camera is bought secondhand in 2001.
A sturdy camera that works still to the day (2005). Image quality is as expected from a 1.3 megapixel image. The build of this camera is actually better than the C2500L.
Easy and fast to use. Thanks to the buffer I can take upto 5 pictures in a row without a problem.
This old camera is still being used now-and-then and really brings back memories...
Problems: None so far...
The focus in low light is not too great but is easily corrected by using the keen manual focus buttons. (don't forget 3 manual settings is enough on a camera with so much DOF).
Opinion: I'm very disappointed with the C1400XL. I upgraded from a D840L (340L in US) about 18 mths ago. My first digital SLR, though I've had 35mm SLRs in the past.
The images are very sharp for a 1.4 MP, even in HQ (middle res), due no doubt to the large lens, but they exhibit EXCESSIVE contrast. In even moderately bright conditions, pale colours are washed out, and shadows are so black that no amount of post processing can retrieve any detail. I can sometimes get a decent image by bracketing every shot with an exposure stop either side of auto, but frankly I'd prefer the camera to do the work.
As noted by other reviewers, the auto focus is hopeless in low light, but I've also found it to be temperamental in bright light unless it has a very hard edge to lock on to. To over-ride it manually you have to depress a button at the same time as releasing the shutter - very fiddly.
The images are a strange size that doesn't equate to the proportions of a PC monitor (hence 1.4 MP not 1.3 MP), and SQ (640) images are full of artifacts (compared to the 840L).
Combine these shortcomings with the bulk of the camera and it's easy to see why I still pick up the old 840L more often than not, and why I'm looking for a replacement compact with a zoom.
Problems: Sometimes refuses to fire. Turning off and on again usually resolves it, but the moment is often gone.
Opinion: I bought mine over two years ago, and it has
withstood the test of time. Not only has this camera
been durable (it has survived a 3-4 foot fall to
concrete, and a couple of other drops) The image
quality is still excellent.
For day-to-day shooting it works great; though a user
needs to know its limitations to achieve the best
results. Low light can be a bit of a problem, it could
also do a little better for indoor action shots. But
overall it is a great day-to-day camera that an take
great shots for both printing and the web.
I have had several 8x10s printed up at the drug store,
and the results are great.
Opinion: It was an upgrade from my first digicam (0.8 meg Fuji) and what a pleasure to use; especially the SLR type viewfinder, giving good battery life. The images were really good, for a 1.3 meg model. Physically a bit on the big side but obviously not intended as point and shoot. Very difficult to fault this camera.
Problems: As others have commented, some focusing difficulty at times but careful use overcame this, mostly.
Opinion: My first digital camera which I've owned since 1998. 3 years later and 5000+ photos I must say that the best thing about it is the photo quality. The colors are true, and the resolution (1280x1024) is excellent. I can almost anticipate the quality of the shots before they even appear on the LCD. This camera delivers a consistent picture quality. Overall, this is an excellent beginner through amature camera. I think I will always keep this camera around for general occasions.
Problems: Extremely difficult and tricky to focus in low light conditions. Once you learn a lot about photography techniques and how to use AP, SP, Slow, 2nd Curt, etc then this camera becomes frustrating to use. At the same time you learn how to control and anticipate the shots (i.e. tricky).
Opinion: The Olympus D-620L is an outstanding camera. I upgraded from a D-600L about a year ago. The 620 offers outstanding picture quality, is easy to use, and can accept an external flash.. A MUST for indoor photographers.. The internal flash is good for about 7' at best but as a fill flash it works great .. or for macro.. I use a Postit stickon note pad as a defuser and get GREAT results.. ONCE you try a true SLR digital you will never want to go back to one of those rangefinger types.
Problems: Internal flash is weak.. not good for more than 7'
Opinion: I agree with the other reviewers comments about the problems in low-light. However, for outdoors photography, you can get some great shots.
Opinion: C1400XL was my second Olympus Digital, and the SLR feature was the compelling reason I bought it. Compared to the C-820L, this camera had speed and feel of a 35mm camera. Some of my first images are stil at my homepage (http://www.xs4all.nl/~fredfell).
Problems: Low light focusing, cyan overtone.
