Opinion: A couple of weeks ago I decided to replace my 5 year old C-770 with a Canon SX20IS.
Just in case I had some trouble with the new camera, I took the C-770 along, as a back-up, on a weeks holiday in beautiful Norfolk Island in the South Pacific. I shot more than 300 images on the Canon and only about 70 on the Olympus.
Being a pre-digital age pro photographer, to me, image quality is THE thing that any camera is judged by. So when I looked at the images on my monitor, I decided right away to bring my old Oly out of retirement.
Due to its way superior image quality, I'll keep using it untill it turns up its toes. The Canon is a well built camera that has lots of bells and whistles, but its POOR/BAD image quality has got me thinking I've wasted my money.
Problems: None.
Opinion: I have had my Silver C770UZ 4 years now takes excellent photos use it all the time so far no problems. Love the 10x zoom and hot shoe feature. Used Olympus 35mm camera's OM2 & OM2S for years with all kinds of lenses in my photo business . I still use them but not as much the 770 is small and easy to carry I'm in the US and bought mine with lense adapter for UV & Polorizing filter.
Problems: Limitations 10x zoom no stabilizer short battery life buy extras like I did Manual on disk do like iIdid print out as 5x7 size you get 2 on and 8x10 sheet take to a copy store like Staples or Kinkos in US and they will spiral bind it for you and put a front and back cover it's 250 pages.
Opinion: I've used my C-770UZ now for 3 years. I paid around £400 when they came out and still think it was worth it. They can be picked up used now from as little as £100 and this has to be a bargain! I've used other cameras during this time, but haven't found any to match the quality of the pictures with the C-770. I'm selling my EOS350D and sticking with this. Even though the pixel count is half that of the Canon, the picture quality is better and as I don't print bigger than A4 pixels aren't that relevent to me. No doubt you could take better pictures with the DSLR if you were to spend a lot of money on top quality lenses, but this would be out of my budget. The C-770 is probably, to my mind at least, the best camera I've owned. Go and find yourself a bargain! Highly recommended!
As an update to this, I've now been using the C-770 for nearly 5 years and it's still going strong! Seriously recommended! (Added 17 April 2009).
Problems: The only downsides I can find to this camera so far are the slow start up time compared to newer models and battery life. Even when it shows "battery low" though, it's usually got a fair bit of life left before you need to change it.
Opinion: What can I say.... this is the second Olympus camera that has "misteriously" brocken down right after the waranty expires... this time, the camera seems be be stuck in Play mode... I removed the battery and card for 1 month in hopes it will reset itself, but it was still stuck. I tried to do a hard reset per instructions in the forrum, but that didn't work either... no matter what option I select (play, picture, movie), all I get is playback mode... argh!
I am thinking of jumping ship so to speak... after 4 Olympus digital cameras, I wil be looking for a different brand for my new camera.
As for the C-770, who knows? Perhaps I will open it myself and try to fix it... perhaps I will sell it as is on ebay... perhaps I will smash it with a hammer... it's useless... Olympus has a planned obsolesence on its products...it occured before, when my old C-4000's flash went out 1 week out of waranty.. argh! At least I continued using that camera for 1 year w/o flash.. now I can't do nothing... all I get is the blue screan saying there are no pics l
Problems: see my nmini-review
Opinion: This was my first digital camera, and I have to say that it was a very successfull choise. The image quality is excellent, it is very compact, its use is very easy, and the zoom is powerfull. I am a night shot fun, and the night shot of c-770 is perfect.
Problems: The only problem is the battery duration. In vacation I shot many photos and I need at least 2 batteries.
Problems: Auto disables the flash which means if you have a bright back ground the foreground image is extremely dark. If you fous on the foreground image then the background can be over exposed. Also focus with lowlight night shots
Opinion: to my mind, this is the best camera with perfect optical possibility and sensor in a range prices up to 450$...
Opinion: Very good camera as in 2004
Problems: no IS
battery life
Opinion: Love this camera! I've owned it over 1 1/2 years and traveled the world with it ...the photos turned out gorgeous. I'm still amazed at the quality of photos this little camera takes.
I have no problem with camera shake using the long zoom. I thought I would, since I'd used only image stabilized long zoom digicams before.
Colors are fantastic, I turn saturation up a notch, very true color.
Very durable...I've hauled it everywhere, dropped it on concrete, still works fine.
This is a real gem most people don't know about.
I own or have owned: Canon A610, Canon S400, Canon dRebel, Olympus 2100, Olympus 5050 and have tested many, many other digicams.
Problems: Not a good low light camera. It really can't be used without tripod for candids or action at dusk outdoors or indoors. Even with flash it will hunt for focus at night indoors.
