Opinion: The lenses are nicely protected. Easy to use, haven't explored all functions. 10X zoom is good, the pre programmed functions are good.

Opinion: A very good camera that I have ever own. Image Quality is totaly better than C-730UZ, and that's why I choose this one. 10x optical zoom is very useful for me to shot birds far away from me, and the speed of zoom-in and out are as fast as I thought and far faster than C-5050z. C-740UZ support the xD memory card, fast reading but expensive retail. The construction of C-740UZ is good because of its metal body, and it's smaller than C-730UZ.

Problems: There are two bad ways: first, the movie function can't record the voice; second. C-740UZ doesnt support the hot shoe. BTW, I'm gladely having this cool comera.

Opinion: This is my first digital camera. I selected this model since coming from the SLR world with manual features and the zoom capabilities. The pictures are amazing. Taken 200 photos and only a handful of bad shots. (operator error, LOL). Very light sturdy body with easy controls. Still using the batteries that came with the camera and have used the movie feature often. Software is pretty basic but very easy to load and use. No major problems focusing indoors and flash is to be expected for it's size.
Bought a 256MB xdrive card. Really not needed but gives this camera plenty of storage capability without downloading. Great choice for me.

Problems: Minor issues.
Manual does not go into details about manually focusing, i.e., one single line, "use manual focus". ?

Using the zoom at max can have some blurryness in lower light conditions but using manual mode with shutter priority takes care of that very easily.

Learned an interesting thing about using a protective filter. It appeared you could screw on a filter on the zooms barrel. The threads taper in. Had to buy 20 buck Olympus CLA4 adapter. A 55mm filter can then be used. Maintaining a constant protective filter extends the footprint (extended barrel) for storage etc. Gives good weather and dust protection for the zoom.

Opinion: I've had this camera for almost a week and have done quite a number of shots with it. I'm a newbie when it comes to prosumer cameras, having come from a pure point-and-shoot background.

The 38-380mm focal length gives this camera a lot of flexibility. It is especially good for close-up macro shots as well as long range telephoto shots. The 3X digital zoom is fairly good too and doesn't degrade the quality of the image too much, which can come in handy is your subject is *just* out of reach.

Pros:

- Great macro and super-macro (3cm) modes
- Long range telephoto
- Rich in features (the usual A,S,M modes, plus AE Lock, Panaroma with Olympus xD cards, etc)
- Manual focus easy to use (once you figure out where it is; download the Reference Manual from Olympus' site)
- Exposure level indicator in Manual mode

Problems: - The tripod mount is plastic.
- Lens barrel feels a bit loose (same issue with all the Olympus Ultra Zoom series).
- Battery life indicator not very helpful (only two levels shown before it powers off).
- A,S and M modes need to be accessed via menu instead of a dedicated dial position or button. Ditto for MyModes.
- Weak popup flash.
- Only one Custom button for either AE Lock, AF Lock, etc.
